Market Update: Career Banker Hugh Wayne Powell Appointed To JMMB’s Boards

The JMMB Group Limited has advised that effective March 13, 2017, Mr. H. Wayne Powell was appointed to their Board of Directors as well as its subsidiary JMMB Merchant Bank Limited.

Mr. Powell has over 45 years banking experience with Scotia Bank Jamaica and was in February 2014 promoted from head of retail banking to Head of Retail Delivery, English Caribbean Region, with The Bank of Nova Scotia, Toronto, Canada – responsible for the growth of the Retail and Small Business portfolios across the Caribbean. Mr. Powell is on a number of boards for the Scotia Group.

Market Update: Gregory Samuels, Scotia Investments VP To Purse Other Interests

Almost a month after the fact, Scotia Investments Jamaica Limited (SIJL) is advising that Mr. Gregory Samuels, one of its senior executives has resigned from SIJL to pursue other interests.

The notice from the investment house (on Feb 3, 2017) stated that Mr.  Samuels, Assistant Vice President, Treasury & Trading, resigned effective January 1, 2017. The scotia group has undergone significant leadership changes at the executive level since last year as a number of its managers have either resigned, retired, made redundant or otherwise. They also hired their first Deputy CEO for the first time.

NDX2 Valued at J$25 Billion

Three of a reported eight financial companies have said they will participate in a second round of the National Debt Exchange to help the Government plug a shortfall in the funds needed to drive down its debt-servicing costs.

The three institutions which have already indicated their willingness in participating are Scotia Group Jamaica, National Commercial Bank Jamaica and GraceKennedy Ltd (parent of First Global Financial Services), while the other five institutions are Sagicor, JMMB Group, Jamaica National Building Society, First Global Financial Services (subsidiary of GraceKennedy), Victoria Mutual Building Society and Guardian Life Limited.

Crime Taking A Toll? NCB to close Red Hills Road branch after 42 years

The Jamaica Observer reports that the “National Commercial Bank (NCB) will shut down its Red Hills Road branch in March [2013] after more than four decades in operation on the St Andrew strip.”

This means “the community is now left without a commercial bank, with Scotiabank having left there in the 1990s, and more importantly another major employer.” Continue Reading
