The most popular topic in Jamaica for the last few days has been the government’s creation of a logistics hub and the sudden increased interest by a set of investors in a ‘protected’ area of the country, targeted for investment. However questions abound as to the intention of the investors and the benefit for the country.
Is it that ‘we’ are so eager to bring in foreign direct investments that ‘we’ don’t examine offers in a 360 degree way? This mega investment proposed by the Chinese (as a part of the whole logistics hub initiative); how exactly will that prove beneficial to Jamaica in the long run. Granted, the foreign interest is welcomed as this opens a window for other proposals…but what else are we willing to lose?
Do you think it could be a case of us not reading the fine print in the contract regarding this Hub and their investment? There has to be a reasonable explanation as to why it feels that we are almost being forced to compromise the state of our environment to suit the desires of the Chinese.
Something doesn’t feel right.
Here’s what a few persons had to say on the issue, read more below.
