Market Insights: Large Caps Drag Market Down – Feb 09, 2020

Welcome to The MoneyMax Market Insight for this week.

Apart from about 6 or 7 days, the Junior market has been on a non-stop decline since the start of 2020. The Junior market is now down -10.75% YTD, -3.75% this week. The main influencers include the largest stocks, which have declined significantly since the start of January.

  • LASM the largest Jr market company is down -11.94%
  • LASD the 2nd largest is down -6.21%
  • FTNA the 3rd largest is down -11.54%
  • Others have declined as well but those 3 give an idea of what has been dragging the market down

Similarly, The Financial Index, which comprises a lot of the larger stocks on the overall market (by market capitalization), has also been on a decline – going down everyday this week (-3.46%) and (-4.79% YTD). This is heavily influenced by NCBFG down -5.15% YTD and SJ down -8.58% YTD and -9.58% this week.

Notice that there has been increasing volumes as well.

One of the things we’re discussing now, is whether these prices are corrections (if they were overpriced) or whether these are now bargains that we should be looking at. What do you think?

Bid-Ask Spreads

Bids > Close Price. Bullish

These stocks are expected to appreciate in price. There is strong demand (smaller spreads) and bid and asks are above the previous close. Bid-ask spreads indicate demand and supply / market liquidity. Bid represents demand and ask supply.

Company Close Bid Ask Spread $ Bid-Ask

A small spread exists when a stock is being actively traded and has high volume – this is normally preferred as it allows orders to be filled quickly at the prices we want.

Bids < / = Close Price. Bearish

These stocks have bids (and possibly asks) below the latest close price. These tend to be stocks with low volumes and/or wider spreads. Small or unknown companies frequently exhibit lower trading volume because fewer investors are interested in relatively unknown firms.

CHL 8.17 7.00 8.17 1.17 +16.71% -14.32% 0.00%

Large bid-ask spreads on illiquid shares are also used by market makers to compensate themselves for assuming the risk of holding low-volume securities. A wide spread represents a higher premium for market makers.

Note: As stocks start to rise, there can be more and more greed in the stock market. You see more and more people thinking, ‘Oh yeah let’s put money on that stock because it’s going up.’ Watch out for that.

Note: Being ‘bearish’ is a sign of pessimism – thinking a stock is going to lose value. ‘Bearish’ investors, therefore, are likely to sell. In some cases (with research) you can take advantage of fear and greed – buying when there’s fear.
