Market Insights: Dividend Stocks In The Spotlight – Apr 24, 2020

Welcome to The MoneyMax Market Insight for this week.

The insights for the week ending Fri Apr 24, 2020 are below.

Points to note:

  • KEY saw big price movements, as investors got in line to benefit from the GK takeover
  • SSLVC was the worst performer this week (not sure if the market knew beforehand that one of their companies was buying out the SSLVC stake)
  • ICREATE is not one of the worst performing, but it hit a low this week, after they published their results, which included serious concerns from auditors about their future existence
  • Let’s see how the market treats the top dividend stocks this week, especially after an announcement (on Friday) from Jamaica’s central bank about the suspension of dividends this year
    • Top dividend stock Carreras is not regulated by the BOJ, and may not suspend theirs, but let’s see what investors do in anticipation. In fact looking at their chart, they have paid dividends consistently from 2016, right through 2018 (during which we had the financial crisis, with special dividends as well)
    • PROVEN has also been paying consistently as well and may reward shareholders after this period is out (if they decide to suspend)
    • Take a look at the Dividend Stocks section to see other stocks to keep an eye on. You can also look at a company’s chart to see their dividend history
    • Coincidentally we have been discussing dividend stocks, as internationallly some companies have already begun suspending theirs. Take a look

Bid-Ask Spreads

Bids > Close Price. Bullish

These stocks are expected to appreciate in price. There is strong demand (smaller spreads) and bid and asks are above the previous close. Bid-ask spreads indicate demand and supply / market liquidity. Bid represents demand and ask supply.

Company Close Bid Ask Spread $ Bid-Ask
Spread %

A small spread exists when a stock is being actively traded and has high volume – this is normally prefered as it allows orders to be filled quickly at the prices we want.

Bids < / = Close Price. Bearish

These stocks have bids (and possibly asks) below the latest close price. These tend to be stocks with low volumes and/or wider spreads. Small or unknown companies frequently exhibit lower trading volume because fewer investors are interested in relatively unknown firms.

Large bid-ask spreads on illiquid shares are also used by market makers to compensate themselves for assuming the risk of holding low-volume securities. A wide spread represents a higher premium for market makers.
