Welcome to The MoneyMax Market Insight for this week.
What did we notice this week
- FTNA pulled back (-16% WTD) after some investors were concerned about the loss they recently reported for the last quarter
- SCIJMD was the best performing stock for the week as investors are feeling optimistic about a possible rights issue. Now the 2nd best perfoming stock YTD (excluding new listings)
- Another bad week for JETCON, and now the worst performing stock for 2019 so far, down 53.62% YTD
- PROVEN, SCIJMD & JAMT continue to trend up (check trending stocks)
- 9 stocks saw their prices trending downwards – notable mention to INDIES and ELITE (now below $5)
- LUMBER and MAILPAC (the two latest IPOs) continued to see active trading, both increased WTD but are down from their peak
- Just noticing this, PBS rounded out the best performers for the week, possibly increasing based on the recent acquisition news
- Over on the TTSE, GK, JMMBGL and NCBFG are trading at much higher prices than the JSE (check the market updates)
- A new IPO First Rock was announced – opening in January. Investors could start taking profits from others
- Under the New Listings, SELECTMD was listed this week and is already -7% below its IPO price

Bid-Ask Spreads
Bids > Close Price. Bullish
These stocks are expected to appreciate in price. There is strong demand (smaller spreads) and bid and asks are above the previous close. Bid-ask spreads indicate demand and supply / market liquidity. Bid represents demand and ask supply.
Company | Close | Bid | Ask | Spread $ | Bid-Ask Spread % |

A small spread exists when a stock is being actively traded and has high volume – this is normally prefered as it allows orders to be filled quickly at the prices we want.
Bids < / = Close Price. Bearish
These stocks have bids (and possibly asks) below the latest close price. These tend to be stocks with low volumes and/or wider spreads. Small or unknown companies frequently exhibit lower trading volume because fewer investors are interested in relatively unknown firms.
Company | Close | Bid | Ask | Spread $ | Bid-Ask Spread % |
Bid Vs Close |
Ask Vs Close |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
ISP | 31.99 | 15.00 | 29.50 | 14.50 | +96.67% | -53.11% | -7.78% |

KLE | 1.75 | 1.45 | 1.75 | 0.30 | +20.69% | -17.14% | 0.00% |
Large bid-ask spreads on illiquid shares are also used by market makers to compensate themselves for assuming the risk of holding low-volume securities. A wide spread represents a higher premium for market makers.
